Creation

The first two weeks in the MFW curriculum are spent studying Creation.  I wish I had the time to share every single activity we did 'cause it was great fun!  Here are a few pages of the Creation book Lucy put together.  She has come a long way in her drawing skills partly thanks to a little book called I can draw animals by Usborne Playtime.  It gives step by step instructions on how to draw each animal.  She has spent hours copying the illustrations on this book.

Pay close attention to her Day 4 of Creation and you'll see flamingos, chickens, bees and turtles.  I love to see how proud she is of her work.

On day 4 of Creation God made the sea creatures and animals of the sky.

I sent them on a scavenger hunt around the house to collect anything that showed what God created on Day 4.  Here are the results...

Here is what they came up with for day 5.

Day 6 of creation when God made the creatures of the land including Man.

and Michael enjoying his sisters' work...

One thing we splurged on this year as far as teaching materials is this felt bible set with mounting boards.  You can re-create any bible story using any of the 700 different felt pieces included.  The pieces are filed with numbers and such for easy access. For the creation story, the girls added things to the board each day as they happened.  Here's the final product.  Some of the details they included and the animals they chose to display made me laugh.  The set comes with 3 mounting boards.  I look forward to giving each their own board and seeing how they each stage things differently.  For now, they just work together.

I loved the way she saw in her mind how things went down on the 7th day.  God rested.  I heard from other moms that their kids left that page empty to illustrate that nothing happened that day.  Here's what Lucy drew...

This is God sitting on his very large throne chair, resting.  Can you see His very long legs hanging from the side of the chair?
For another exercise, I gave her a bunch of magazines and had her make a table with 2 columns, a God column and a Man column then cut things that God made and things that are man made and put them under the correct column.  Here's her chart.  One of my favorite things about teaching her at home is how I get to know her better with every activity we do.  I mean, the things she chose to cut, the way she sees things, her heart is all over every one of those things she drew, cut, made.  I know this sounds selfish but I would hate to have to give up that pleasure and let other people enjoy my kid.  Maybe one day... but for now, she's all mine! :)

I was told the hotdog laying on top of the line was a tricky one... God made the cow that was slayed to make that hot dog BUT man put the toppings on top ;)
One of the highlights (for me) of teaching her the Creation story was getting her to understand a few things about the story that make a difference and that will make a difference in her life.  I wanted her to know that God SPOKE things into creation.  We talked about the power of the spoken word and how since we are made in God's image, our words are very powerful as well.  Our words can lift up, edify, build up, encourage, bless or they can destroy, discourage, bring down, abuse.

The other point I wanted to get across was that God made man first.  Then, He made woman to be a helper for man.  We talked about how my job is to be a helper for her Daddy and how one day should marriage be part of God's plan for her, she would get to be a helper to her husband.

AND this concludes my post on our study of Creation. :)
