Today Lucy learned how to clean a goose.
Her Daddy brought them home after a successful morning hunting and while I quietly squirmed, eeewww-ed and made myself scarce from the kitchen, he proceeded with great calm and purpose. He wants to raise his daughters to not only be able to hunt and prepare their food if presented with the opportunity or need but also to enjoy themselves while doing it. I support his efforts 100%, from a distance ;)
The thing about introducing the subject of hunting to a 3 year old is that one needs to be able to tackle the subject of death along with it. If I would have known of the events that would be taking place on my kitchen island this morning, I might have spent some time thinking of and rehearsing a little lecture intended to gently break the news that no one lasts forever. I would have probably found some bible verses maybe even a Veggie Tales movie... I'm sure amazon could have been trusted to produce several hundred titles on "how to talk to your preschooler about death".
Contrary to how I envisioned this delicate conversation unfolding, the following is the exchange that took place between father and daughter:
Lucy: Is that goose sleeping?
Jim: Nope, it's dead. Looks like its sleeping, doesn't it?
Lucy: Yeah. Why are they in the cooler and not flying?
Jim: I went hunting this morning and I shot them.
Lucy: with your bow and arrow?
Jim: No, with a gun.
Lucy: Oh. What are you doing now?
Jim: We have to clean them up and save the meat to make gumbo. Here, hold the head while I cut here.
Fast-forward a few hours and I am walking with her in the Walmart parking area when she sees a handful of black crows pecking at something on the ground and yells "quick Mom! get them!".
What can I say, the kid likes her gumbo! Lots to learn still.

Danaly,
Josh once said "you know my dad loves birds, they are his favorite animals-remember he likes to shoot them!" It is interesting how kids view things.
