Hill Country & the Eagle's Nest

We took our spring break this year in early March.  We packed up our travel camper and headed to the Texas Hill Country with friends. 

The scenery was beautiful.

We were off from school but still had fun learning some new things :)

 One of the best learning moments of our trip (at least for me) was finding a Bald Eagle's nest. 

Here's our crew as we parked on the side of the road to watch in amazement.  To say, we were excited was an understatement.

We soon realized this was a major event in the area.  There were photographers with lenses the length of my arm trying the capture the eaglets hatching.  Not too far from this nest was an abandoned bald eagle's nest.  It was interesting to learn that an abandoned eagle's nest can weigh hundreds of pounds.  Apparently, they add to their nest every year for many years.  What an extraordinary sight!

Can you see the eagle sitting close to her nest on the branch?  Obviously, I wasn't using one of the fancy cameras.

 

Our expedition took us to Llano, Texas for part of one day and there we stopped at the World War II Veterans Memorial.

My favorite part about traveling with friends is that there are always arms willing to hold babies... even if the babies are not so thrilled about it.

The memorial was great to see but I have to come clean and share that the real reason behind the detour into Llano was the lunch at the legendary Cooper's BBQ.  The whole thing is an experience from beginning to end.  They have these huge smoker's outside where you go and pick out your meat then take it inside to be weighed and priced.

Jim thinks this is how we'll eat in heaven ;)

There's a package of wonder bread on each table and a big jar of pickles.  A wax paper placemat is your plate.

Next stop was the Texas' German town - Fredericksburg

  

We had a nice stroll down their main street and spent some time at Rustlin Rob's where we found some great snacks.

Only in Texas.

While in the area we went to Wildseed Farms, the largest working wildflower farm in the nation.  This was my personal favorite place we visited during our time in the Hill Country.  I could show 100 pictures but here some I like of Jenna near some Texas bluebonnets.
