the wordless book & our first international mission

Lucy was first introduced to the wordless book by her Missions class teacher, Pauline.  She brought it home and in typical Lucy fashion wasted no time before telling everyone in the family about it.  Several. Dozen. Times :)  I love her enthusiasm!

The wordless book uses colors to share the gospel of Jesus and the plan of salvation.   Here is how the book is presented to a child:

GOLD makes us think of money, jewelry, riches.  Some people have lots of these but the one who is richest and most generous is God.  He owns the whole world because He made it.  He also made you and me.  God lives in Heaven, a wonderful place of light, beauty and happiness.  The Bible describes Heaven as having a street of gold.  God wants you to go there someday and live with Him forever.

BLACK  reminds us of sin.  Wanting your own way is sin.  Doing, saying or thinking bad things is sin.  Sin is disobeying the rules God has given in His book, the Bible.  Sin causes sadness in our world.  God's Word says "All have sinned" (Romans 3:23).  All means every one of us, including you and me.  Sin separates us from God because He is perfectly good - without any sin at all.  God can't allow sin where He is.  God says sin must be punished.  The punishment is to be separated from Him forever. God knew there was nothing we could do to get rid of our sin.  BUT He loved us so much that He came up with a solution to this problem.

RED reminds us of the blood of Jesus.  God sent His only son, Jesus into the world as a baby.  Jesus grew to be a man but He never sinned.  He never did anything wrong.  God's plan was to punish His Son for all the wrong thins you and I have done.  Jesus willingly bled and died on the cross to take away our sin.

WHITE reminds us the something clean.  Jesus wants to forgive all our sin and make us clean in the sight of God.  The Bible says that whoever believes in Jesus should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).  Do you know what it means to believe?  It means to turn to Jesus and trust Him to forgive you and to give you eternal life.

GREEN makes us think of life and growth like the grass and trees that grow.  God wants us to grow too.  Not just growing taller and bigger but to grow in love.  When we turn from our sins, trusting in Jesus, we receive a new life.  We are born again into God's family.  Now God will help us live in a different way.  He does this by giving us a Helper, the Holy Spirit who moves into our heart and guides us.

One of the reasons we homeschool is to have the flexibility to serve and get involved in ministry work alongside the kids.

A few weeks ago we had the neat opportunity to turn our homeschool into a keychain making factory to help out a missionary friend from our church who will be in Guatemala later this month witnessing to children in that area.

We used the same concept of the wordless book to make keychains that would tell the gospel of Jesus through colors.

This was such a great project for little hands!  I often feel like our children are still too young to get involved in certain mission work.  I don't want to limit them but at the same time I want to have realistic expectations.  This was a perfect project for our age group.  It stretched them a bit beyond their skill level but not enough that it frustrated them.

They felt so useful.  At one point, Lucy said to Jim "Daddy, please don't interrupt me.  I am doing God's work.  This is an important project."  Bless her sweet heart!

Jenna's job was to sort the pony beads by color.  Lucy would tie the knot around the keychain ring then place the beads in the right order and hand them to me for the last tight knot.

My job was to create and laminate labels in Spanish that could be attached to the keychains explaining what each of the colors meant.  The back of the label had a prayer for salvation a child can use to pray for Jesus to come into their hearts.

We also made some keychains for the American missionaries with two labels, one in English and one in Spanish.

My 4th grade Sunday School class pitched in and between them and our homeschool we made 250 keychains.

The final and best step of all was praying over the keychains.  We prayed that God would take that small simple object and use it to save lives through Jesus.
