Vv - Vegetables

A month or so ago with did our VEGETABLE unit.  We learned that:

God gives us all that we need

The highlight of our week was our field trip to the produce section of our big grocery store.

Lucy went in armed with a book about vegetables and her goal was to find as many of the vegetables in her book as possible.  I told them they could choose a handful of veggies to buy and bring home.

We had a great time looking at and touching some fun and different veggies...

 (& fruits).

She liked that this grapefruit was about the size of her head :)
We used their fancy scales to weigh our produce and calculate how much we would owe based on the weight and the price of each.

The homemaker in me had to point out the already prepared veggies and give a little lesson on home economics by explaining that veggies can be bought already washed and chopped but we pay money for that added convenience.

To prove the point I wanted her to choose a vegetable that needed a little prep work so we could time how long it would take her to get it ready to eat.  I was pleased to see her pick out some corn on the cob.  It made the rest of my lesson a breeze!  We went home and she got to work.

We went on to talk about all the different kinds of food we can make with a single vegetable.  We used corn as our example since we already had it prepped.  The first one they thought off was the obvious, corn on the cob with butter.  So, that's what they had for lunch.

Pop corn was also on the list so we made some for snack to the delight of baby brother.

Finally, we made some corn bread to go with our dinner and that one was probably the biggest hit.  I said a little prayer they wouldn't get sick from corn overdose... I don't think we've ever had that much corn product in one day!

here is me pretending I can take pretty food photos... at least it was tasty!

Another fun week of learning!
