Our church's AWANA club started back this week and we couldn't be more excited about it. Lucy is a Spark this year and her very first verse to learn was John 3:16. Jim and I both serve in this ministry but with other age groups and during the training session they gave us some pointers for how to help the kiddos with memory work. I decided to try it with Lucy on her first verse and it worked like a charm! I've used other exercises for memory work but this one matched Lucy's learning style perfectly.
It's simple. What you do is write the verse (or whatever they are trying to memorize) on a write/erase board and underline each word. Read it to them (or let them read it if they already read) and each day let them choose a word or words to erase.
Here's Lucy erasing her first word.
Three words gone!
6 words gone and by this time she already had it memorized.
And here is my little ball of energy reciting John 3:16. Notice how she can't sit still and has to add a little dance here and there :) BTW, it looks like she's reading it from somewhere on the side but she's not. There's just stuff on the table that's distracting her. She doesn't know how to read words like "begotten" or "everlasting" just yet ;)
