One of the things I like about Charlotte Mason and MFW is the way they have the students interact with literature... especially the little ones. At one point (once the student is at least 6 years old) they will start narrating orally or in writing (composition) but at age 4/5 they use drawing and re-enacting as the ways to find out what the little ones got out of the books.
The moon lesson was fabulous. Two of our highlights:
1. After reading the story of Little Bear going to the moon we had you Lulu use your imagination and any resources you had available to create a space helmet and then re-enact the story. I left you to your own devices and didn't suggest any materials (which was a little scary 'cause who knows what you could have gotten into!!) but after about 10 minutes running from your room to the school room you came out with this... a helmet made out of headband, a red bow and hand-drawn sign that you made holes into and tied string to put around your head. The only part I helped you with was tying the string around your head. You also made a flag out of a pencil, tape and blue paper. You drew a picture of yourself and your sister on the flag and told me you would be putting it down on the moon once you arrived there. I thought it was so creative and cute!! I was glad to notice you were paying attention to the youtube video you watched earlier in the week that talked about the moon and showed Neil Armstrong putting the American flag into moon soil as he took the first steps there. It amazes me how much you little people absorb.
2. As part of the lesson, you were asked to come up with a way to shine the light of Jesus to others. You decided you wanted us to bake something and take it to someone. We ended up making coffee cake and dropping it off at the Fire House for the firefighters to enjoy. We didn't make an appointment, just showed up and I had decided to let you do most of the talking. I wanted to hear you explain to them why you were bringing them cake but they didn't ask (probably used to be on the receiving end of people's kindness). It was still a really neat experience and you got a tour of the fire house as a bonus!
